Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande, an island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, is a place where tropical forest and coastline meet in striking harmony. Once a pirate hideout and later the site of a penal colony, it has evolved into one of Brazil’s most remarkable island destinations. With no cars allowed and no large resorts, the island moves at a different pace, where footpaths and boats are the main ways to get around. The air is filled with the sounds of the Atlantic Forest, and the ocean stretches in every direction, creating an atmosphere that feels both wild and welcoming.

One of Ilha Grande’s greatest appeals is its network of beaches and trails. Lopes Mendes Beach is a standout, often listed among the most beautiful in Brazil and known for its soft white sand and clear surf. Other highlights include Lagoa Azul, a natural swimming pool with vibrant blue water, and Abraãozinho, a small beach perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring. More than 150 kilometers of hiking trails weave through the island, passing waterfalls, lookout points, and patches of dense Atlantic rainforest where monkeys and colorful birds are often spotted.
